Climate Crisis: Take Action

Climate Crisis: Take Action

Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing the Philippines. The country is particularly prone to natural hazards such as landslides, floods, and typhoons, which are becoming increasingly intense and occurring more frequently due to global warming. One predominant reason of climate change is the continuous of greenhouse gas from human activities such as deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels. In addition, human activities such as mining and, conversion of forests to farmland. These activities may affect the environment’s natural balance, resulting in sudden changes that may endangered
communities’ daily life and safety.

Climate change also has a big impact on the Philippines’ agriculture. Increased extreme weather events, such as longer droughts and stronger typhoons, may lead to livestock stress and reduced water availability in the Philippines. These consequences may lead to higher food prices, poverty, greater dependence on food imports, and endangering the food security. Furthermore, climate change may lead to soil erosion and degradation, an increase in pests and diseases, and a reduction in crop yields. Coastal populations and agricultural fields are also at risk from rising sea levels, which may result in waterlogging of agricultural areas, depriving plant roots of oxygen, and leading to crop failure or damage.

Vulnerable people like farmers, fishermen, person with disabilities, and families who live near riskier places are most likely get affected due to lack of safety and resources.
When disaster strikes, they lose their houses and their resources. Climate change also bring serious health risks. Floods cause diseases like dengue, leptospirosis, and diarrhea and extreme heat can lead to dehydration and heatstroke. Air pollution causes asthma  and other lung problems and lack of food resources may lead to malnutrition.

Despite these challenges, Filipinos are known to be resilient. After every disaster, people unite under the bayanihan spirit to support one another's reconstruction and future. Communities, schools and local governments should also teach about climate change. Their strength and unity demonstrate the Filipino people's resilience in the face of adversity. Filipinos should protect, the environment, plant trees, use clean energy and practice sustainable living to lessen the risks and protect the livelihood of the community.
