Fighting For The Safety Of Every Child In The Age Of The Internet

The theme “OSAEC-CSAEM Wakasan: Kaligtasan at Karapatan ng Bata, Ipaglaban!” reminds us that we need to protect the children from sexual abuse and exploitation. In today’s digital age, children are more connected to the internet than ever before, which allows them to learn and explore. However, it also exposes them to dangers such as grooming, cyberbullying, and exploitation that children are unaware of.  This theme is not only that the ending of exploitation is not just the responsibility of parents and teachers, but also the society, especially the government, to ensure that every child grows up in a safer environment, respected and free from exploitation. If the child is endangered, we must act immediately.

The Philippine government has taken major actions to protect the children’s welfare through laws and programs. The Republic Act of 11930 is an example of how the state takes a stand against online exploitation. This law strengthens the collaboration of different agencies such as the DOJ, DICT, DSWD, and PNP. The agencies’ role is to protect the children from online exploitation. The government also conducts programs in schools and communities to help parents and children recognize and prevent online dangers.

Although these laws are beneficial, awareness and actions are true challenges. Many children on the internet still lack proper education about safety, especially those in poor or rural areas. Teachers, law enforcers, and social workers must have continuous training so they can properly respond to cases of abuse. Internet platforms and technology companies must have the responsibility of strengthening their systems to detect and block exploitive content. It’s not only the government’s responsibility to protect the children, but society must work together to achieve this.

Furthermore, children must have the power to speak up and know their rights. Children become more aware and confident in confronting their abuse when they are taught self-defense and the importance of dignity. Schools should include lessons about the dangers of the internet and children's rights as part of their curriculum. Communities should open a safe space for children to express themselves freely without shame and fear. Every child has the right to speak freely rather than to suffer in silence.

In conclusion, the National Children’s Month is a powerful call to action. Ending the OSAEC-CSAEM is not only to punish criminals, but it also allows every child to feel safe, respected, protected, and free from harm. The government and society must continue to fight and protect the dignity of the children. After all, protecting children means securing a promising and compassionate future for our country. Every child deserves to live in a world where they can grow, dream, and learn without fear, and it is our responsibility to make that a reality.
